IBM MQ support for large queues

Technical Blog Post

Abstract

IBM MQ supports queues larger than 2 TB.

Body

Many messaging patterns encourage keeping queue depths to a minimum. However, IBM MQ supports queues larger than 2 TB for scenarios requiring more significant historical message storage; for example during downstream outages that can cause a significant backlog of messages for processing.

The enabling large queues section of the IBM MQ product documentation describes the steps and considerations for considering large queue file support.

For information about planning the amount of storage you need for queues, see IBM MQ Performance documents for platform-specific performance reports. A performance report is available that describes significant performance enhancements made to queue manager restart times in the 9.1.1 continuous delivery release, and demonstrates how these enhancements also apply to large queues. These enhancements are also available in IBM MQ 9.2 and later Long Term Support releases)

From IBM MQ 9.1.5, you can control the size of queue files by setting a new attribute on local and model queues. See Modifying IBM MQ queue files for more information.
