Price Changes on IBM z/OS V1 Operating System Software Program Products

Overview

Today, IBM announces price increases for z/OS Operating System and its features.

  • Effective with the billing period that starts on or after April 1, 2012 the monthly license charges (MLC) will increase for the following program and its features:

This pricing announcement does not apply to Entry Workload License Charges (EWLC), Advanced Entry Workload License Charges (AEWLC) or Flat Workload License Charges (FWLC).

The first release of z/OS® V1 was delivered in March 2001. Since that time, IBM has delivered twelve additional releases that have provided substantial function and performance enhancements. IBM is committed to making ongoing z/OS investments targeted at helping deliver innovation and value.

V1.9    z/OS Communications Server Policy Agent to centrally collect and distribute network settings in a simplified and auditable manner
V1.12  Simplified configuration of FICON-connected disk & tape through z/OS FICON Discovery and Auto Configuration capability

Cost
V1.9,   zIIP-Assisted HiperSockets™ for Large Messages, IBM SCAFR for zIIP, zIIP-assisted XRC, 
V1.10  additional z/OS XML System Services exploitation of zIIP & zAAP, and IPSec processing to take advantage of zIIPs
V1.11  z/OS CIM server processing to run on zIIP
V1.12  z/OSMF, the new face of z/OS, can help slash time from systems administrative and management tasks

Over the past decade, IBM has also delivered several programs to deliver price performance improvements aimed at lowering recurring software costs:

  • Sub-capacity pricing to license eligible software products for less than the full capacity of the server or group of servers 
  • Specialty engines (like zIIPs or zAAPs) to expand the use of the IBM mainframe for designated workloads, designed to help lower the cost of ownership
  • System z™ New Application License Charges (zNALC) to offer a reduced price for z/OS® on LPARs running IBM qualified workloads
  • Technology enhancements such as defined capacity and group capacity limits to better enable customers to manage their software utilization and bill

Effective April 1, 2012 the price of IBM z/OS Version 1 will increase. 

Charges

Prices for these recurring charges (MLC) will increase between 5 % and 6% on average depending on the pricing metric. Average VWLC and AWLC increase for a 500 MSU configuration will be around 6%.

Terms and conditions of existing contracts will determine the applicability and specific effect of the price change.
