Shopify said it will offer support for Apple Pay on its e-commerce platform this fall. The announcement is tied to Apple's plans to bring Apple Pay to mobile and web browsers -- a move that significantly expands the reach of the mobile wallet and its ability to compete against PayPal and Amazon.

Similarly, IBM said it will offer Apple Pay on the web to clients running online shops through WebSphere and Commerce Cloud.

As it currently stands, Apple Pay can be used in physical retail stores and on some apps -- not on mobile websites and online stores. But when Apple's new MacOS Sierra rolls out later this year, Apple Pay will become available as a payment option at checkout in many online stores. Shopify currently powers online stores for 275,000 merchants while IBM says it powers over 12,000 storefronts.

There will be limitations, of course, as users will be required to run Safari on iPhone, iPad, or Mac to authenticate purchases via TouchID and a linked Apple Pay wallet.

As for Shopify, the company said Apple Pay will be available to merchants using Shopify's in-house payment gateway, as well as Stripe, Braintree, FirstData Payeezy, Authorize.Net, and CyberSource. IBM plans to offer the Apple Pay integration as a widget.
